Casady & Greene

Casady & Greene first got on my radar in my search for a higher contrast alternative to Limelight. I arrived at Ritz FLF and sought to find the original source so I could package and install it with Nix. However, I hit a roadblock: the earliest source I could find was a page on typOasis from 2004.¹ There was little to no information on Ritz FLF itself or its license.

And so began my curiosity.

Robin Casady founded Casady Company in 1984, later renamed to CasadyWare.² Mike Greene founded Greene, Inc. in 1986³ to make software.² The two merged on August 1988 into Casady & Greene, producing both fonts and entertainment software.³

CasadyWare made bitmapped typefaces for the Macintosh called Fluent Fonts. They went on to produce the first downloadable PostScript fonts, beating the very creator of PostScript, Adobe. They were called Fluent Laser Fonts, abbreviated as FLF. Richard Ware digitized many of these fonts.⁴

Unfortunately, Casady & Greene struggled to stay afloat in the years leading up to 2003, and they closed their doors on 3 July 2003. Their many fonts can still be found on various websites today. Luc Devroye’s page on Casady & Greene holds a great image collection of their fonts.

According to Mike Wright, a designer at Casady & Greene, their fonts are now in the public domain.⁴
